About Us
Graves Foundation Quarter Horse Farm is located in southern Indiana, in a small town about 1.5 hours south of Indianapolis. We are life-long AQHA and NFQHA members and we have been raising these exact same Poco Bueno/King bloodlines for over 10 years now. We stand one stallion and have five mares in our broodmare band. Since our farm is small, we have hand picked these five mares of the best quality to cross with our stallion. Four of the five mares have Poco Bueno twice on their AQHA paper!
In the past 12 years, we have bought 3 young horses (all bought from different breeders at different pickup times). When we picked these 3 weanlings up, we were super disappointed to find out that none of the 3 weanlings had been handled, socialized and none of them were halter broke. From that day on we made it our vow that we would never let a foal leave our property this way. We are proud to say that every one of our foals are handled daily from birth. By pickup they are all halter broke, you can pick up their feet, swing ropes around their heads, touch them anywhere and they load. Our foals are kept right here near the house and are not on the "back forty" just to be brought in at weaning time. We make sure they are well socialized to people, other animals, large trucks, buses, 4 wheelers and whatever we can expose them to before they leave our property. Fly masks, fly spray, blankets, plastic bags, giving to pressure and stepping over wood is part of our training...these things give our foals a excellent start before they ever leave our property.
In the last two years our program took a small turn. Since the kids (ours and the nieces and nephews) were now all of riding age, we replaced our non-broke broodmares with good broke ones. We are pleased to say that four of five mares are now broke to ride (see pictures at the bottom of the mare page). It is hard to justify feeding the horses if we are not using them, so our goal is to use them all whether it be leisure riding, working, trail, show or 4h.
In our spare time our family enjoys boating, fishing, 4-wheeling, playing softball, baseball, basketball and hunting. In addition to our foundation quarter horses, we have two children and labrador retrievers.
